Mantel Clocks

Mantel clocks, otherwise known as shelf clocks, are relatively small indoor timepieces traditionally placed on the shelf or mantel above the fireplace. This clock form, first developed in 18th Century France, can be distinguished from earlier chamber clocks of similar size due to a lack of carrying handles. These clocks were often highly ornate, decorative works. Today, we see contemporary versions in glass as well as traditional wooden replica pieces.
