EDINBURGH CRYSTAL SADLY IS NOW NO LONGER AVAILABLE. HOWEVER ROYAL SCOT CRYSTAL HAS MANY SUITABLE HIGH QUALITY TRADITIONAL CUT AND CONTEMPORARY CUT CRYSTAL WINE GLASS SUITES
Edinburgh Crystal started making crystal glass in Scotland from 1867 before the factory went into administration in July 2006 with all 450 employees being made redundant.
In 2007 Waterford Wedgwood Group (WWRD) purchased the rights to the Edinburgh brand and outsourced glass production to quality European crystal factories.
In January 2009 WWRD themselves went into administration and were bailed out by an American Private Equity company KPS Capital Partners. Sadly a decision was made that Edinburgh Crystal did not fit their product portfolio and the brand has been mothballed.
The iconic designs of Star of Edinburgh and Thistle sadly are now extinct with no real matching alternate. The only true mouth blown, hand cut crystal glass factory is Heritage Crystal which is made in Waterford, Ireland using former Waterford Crystal craftsmen.
Here are near alternatives for the 2 best selling ranges of imported glassware, Tay see Royal Scot Highland - same cutting but different shape wine glasses; Skye see Royal Scot Westminster similar shape and cutting.
Like all of you we feel that the Edinburgh brand has mileage and in the right hands could be resurrected. Strategically this is unlikely to happen as WWRD protect their other crystal brands not least Waterford Crystal.
As general good quality crystal you are now not going to get much better than the Royal Scot range of glassware . As it happens Royal Scot is a family business and the father Malcolm Sergent knows a thing or two about Edinburgh - he used to be the Managing Director in the 80's.
