Probably the most famous cruise liner in the world and yet the Titanic was only 4 days into her maiden voyage before she perished.

Owned by the White Star Line shipping company and built in the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, the Royal Mail Ship RMS Titanic was constructed to the highest standards of luxury and safety of the time.

Setting off on her maiden voyage from Southampton on 10th April 1912 with 2,223 on board, en route to New York City, the Titanic hit an iceberg on the 14th April at 11.30 pm, finally sinking at 2.30 am on the morning of 15th April with the loss of 1,517 lives.

The sinking of the Titanic has been the stuff of legends as books, films and documentaries have kept the myths and tales of gallantry and tragedy alive forever. Bands playing, the honour of man, as women and children were evacuated first, the brave unselfish efforts of the crew and remarkable stories of survival.

The interest has been maintained because the Titanic was meant to be unsinkable, there was also a number of rich and famous aboard and the lasting impact the incident had on maritime safety.
